Medical mushrooms are mushrooms used as medicine. For more than 30 years, medical fungi have been approved as an addition to standard treatments in Japan and China. The most important of the most important compounds in fungi are called beta-glucans, and they offer a variety of health benefits. Current research shows that beta-glucan's most important benefit to our health is to modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation. In addition, they can help control blood sugar, reduce the feeling of fatigue and increase general endurance. They have also been shown to be of benefit to those with cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. In some cases, beta-glucans may have a positive effect on malignant conditions based on their ability to increase certain immune cells that increase autophagi. Medical mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with variants such as Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Løvemane, Turkey Tail and Cordyceps known for their powerful health benefits. Some of the most common are Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi), Trametes versicolor or Coriolus versicolor (turkey tail), Lentinus Edodes (Shiitake) and Gripola Frondosa (Maitake). It is believed that certain chemical compounds, such as polysaccharides (beta-glucans) in the turkey-tailed fungi, strengthen the immune system to fight cancer. Medical mushrooms are not approved treatment in the public health system in Norway.
