Mushrooms are fungi that bear spores which are for reproduction and at the end of their growing season, they release millions of spores. Studies have found them to contain the highest concentration of bioactive materials of the mushroom including triterpenes, more than the mushroom itself. Being called ‘lingzhi’ in Chinese, traditional Chinese medicine has used Reishi mushrooms for over 2000 years. Though they had not extracted triterpenes or even discovered their existence, they were able to hypothesize that a group of chemicals were responsible for these marvellous benefits. However, with advancing scientific studies and knowledge, today we have been able to identify and isolate these compounds which, when used regularly, can promote health and encourage long life.

What is Reishi?
Reishi grows in various hot and humid locations in Asia and has been used in eastern medicine for years to treat infections. It contains several molecules that may be responsible for its health benefits, such as triterpenoids, polysaccharides and peptidoglycans.
Health Benefits:
Immune System support. One of the most important effects of reishi is the impact it can have on the immune system. The mushroom is full of biologically active molecules which promote the immune system, longevity, the cardiovascular system and the brain, research shows that these molecules can increase the activity of natural killer cells. Studies have found that reishi can affect the genes in white blood cells, and may alter inflammation pathways in these cells. One specific compound found in reishi called Ganoderma Lucidym Peptide is thought to be responsible for the mushroom’s antioxidant capacity, with polyaccharides and triterpenes targeting inflammation and boosting the immune system. Triterpenes also offer protection against viruses, fungal and microbial infections.
Anti-cancer properties
Many studies suggest evidence of reishi’s anti-cancer properties. For example, on study of over 4000 breast cancer survivors found that 59% consumed reishi. Other research has shown that the consumer of reishi can also lead to the death of cancer cells, as well as being beneficial for prostate and colorectal cancer.
History:
This powerful mushroom has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2000 years and is known as the ‘Medicine of Kings’ as its earliest known uses was a special tonic for emperors seeking immortality. Reishi is described as one of the most important elixirs in Chinese medicine, alongside Ginseng.
