Magnesium bicarbonate – the ultimate mitochondrial «booster»?

Magnesium bicarbonate – the ultimate mitochondrial "booster"?
Bicarbonate, also known as HCO3, is a byproduct of the body's metabolism. Your blood carries bicarbonate to your lungs, where it is exhaled as carbon dioxide. Your kidneys also help regulate bicarbonate. Bicarbonate is excreted and reabsorbed by your kidneys. This regulates the body's pH, or acid balance.

There are good reasons why many believe it is very important to have substances that counteract the accumulation of acids, support detoxification, reduce nutritional deficiencies, modulate and increase the immune system, and improve circulation in the body. Without removing toxins and acids from all organs, cells, and tissues, and without providing the essential nutritional building blocks such as magnesium, the body will not be able to heal itself. When the body's tissues and cells become too acidic, the foundation is laid for tissue inflammation and degeneration when the environment promotes the growth of disease-causing organisms (anaerobic pathogens) that thrive in oxygen-poor environments. Increased oxidative stress, which more or less correlates exponentially with changes in acid/base (pH) toward an acidic internal environment, is particularly dangerous for the mitochondria, which are damaged by elevated oxidative stress.

Magnesium bicarbonate is necessary for the sodium/potassium pump to function, which is essential for the cells' ability to build up voltage. If a magnesium bicarbonate deficiency occurs, the pumping of sodium bicarbonate out of the cell and the pumping of potassium bicarbonate into the cell are compromised.
This is part of the ATP cycle, which contributes to the conversion of energy in the mitochondria. One of the fundamental approaches to good medicine must include helping the body achieve a higher electrical potential and thus be slightly alkaline, so that it can, among other things, get rid of acids from the cell tissue and our organs. Magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate taken with pure water as needed are a good way to deliver magnesium ions and bicarbonate ions to body cells. Magnesium- and bicarbonate-rich mineral waters are easily absorbed and have many health benefits.

Diseases such as cancer contribute to increased secretion of lactic acid, similar to physical exercise. The use of bicarbonate can relieve the body during special periods of life. In general, the body's ability to produce bicarbonate on its own declines from the age of 40, so most people will benefit from additional intake. When starting a detoxification protocol and the kidneys need to flush out acid, and during such "intensive" periods, using bicarbonate is also a help for the body. We recommend that everyone with health problems and people who use bicarbonate over time use pH urine test strips.

Magnesium – an overlooked mineral?

Magnesium – an overlooked mineral?
Many Norwegians do not get optimal doses of magnesium in relation to calcium. Anyone who uses milk and/or dairy products consumes more calcium than we have adapted to through the evolutionary process, which may lead to a range of diseases. Nevertheless, many doctors recommend calcium supplements and not magnesium, among other things to counteract osteoporosis. Research indicates that a high calcium supplement intake may lead to more osteoporosis, increased mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other disorders. The paragraph is taken from Helsemagasinet Vitenskap og fornuft and written by Dag Viljen Poleszynski

In short

  • From an evolutionary perspective, humans are adapted to consume slightly more calcium than magnesium
  • Those who use milk and dairy products consume much more calcium than magnesium
  • Many women are recommended calcium supplements to counteract osteoporosis
  • Most adults should consume more magnesium to counteract a high calcium intake

Osteoporosis is associated almost exclusively with calcium deficiency, but can often be due to too little intake of magnesium, possibly vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin D, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and too little estrogen/testosterone. Norway is among the highest in the world when it comes to asthma and allergies, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, depression, dementia, diabetes, arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases such as MS. Could one reason be that we consume too little magnesium and too much calcium?

What is the correct use of magnesium bicarbonate?
The question is too general, and we are different with different health challenges, so an absolute answer cannot be given here, but some rules of thumb for when it is often sensible to use the product.

  1. You are deficient in magnesium and need a supplement
  2. You drink enough water and eat normally, and your pH (which can easily be checked with so-called pH strips) in the middle of the day is below 6.5-6.7 (when you have been drinking well since the morning)
  3. You have started a detox protocol and are excreting a lot of acid
  4. You eat a lot of protein (which produces uric acid)
  5. You exercise a lot or participate in active sports
  6. You are over have reduced kidney function
  7. You have problems with oxygen distribution in the body
  8. You are exposed to a lot of stress and poor sleep

When should you not use magnesium bicarbonate?

  1. Never right before or right after food (you get a temporary reduction in stomach acid, which is needed to digest the food properly). Use 2 hours as a rule of thumb.
  2. You have a pH from 6.5 and upward in the urine (upward means higher numbers)
  3. You have already done a course for up to 3 months; then it is time to take a break and see whether the body itself can maintain a normal pH
  4. You have a serious illness. In that case, you should have it examined more thoroughly whether bicarbonate is beneficial in your case.
