Updates on earthing (Earthing, Grounding): science, benefits, and solutions

Jan Fredrik Poleszynski |

Grounding, also known as earthing or grounding, is a practice that involves electrically connecting the body to the earth’s surface, either by walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil, bathing in natural water, or using grounding products such as mats, sheets, patches, and rods. The hypothesis is that the earth’s negative electrical charge is transferred to the body and helps neutralize free radicals, reduce oxidative stress, and balance the body’s electrical system. Recent research indicates that grounding may have measurable effects on the cells’ mitochondria, sleep, inflammation, circulation, and stress regulation, and studies also suggest that humans may be connected to the earth’s electromagnetic field, including the Schumann resonance.

Benefits and effects

🌱 More energy at the cellular level
A new study published in FEBS Open Bio (2025) showed that grounded individuals produced 5–11% more ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the body’s primary energy carrier. The mitochondria, which are the cells’ small powerhouses, became more efficient and used less energy to produce the same amount of fuel.

🛡️ Reduced oxidative stress
The same study documented that oxidative stress was 22–33% lower in grounded individuals. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body and is associated with aging and cellular wear and tear.

😴 Better sleep and reduced stress
A study from 2004 showed that sleeping on grounding sheets normalized the circadian rhythm of cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone. Participants also reported better sleep quality, less pain, and a calmer mind.

🔥 Less inflammation and faster recovery
Studies have suggested that grounding may reduce inflammation markers and improve blood flow, resulting in faster recovery after physical activity. Several athletes report less muscle soreness and shorter recovery time when using grounding mats or patches.

❤️ Strengthened heart health
Grounding is linked to lower blood viscosity (the blood flows more easily), better circulation, and increased HRV (heart rate variability). HRV is a biomarker of the body's ability to handle stress, and high HRV is associated with better resilience and cardiovascular health.

👶 Clinical findings
A study of premature infants in Indonesia showed that one hour of grounding daily for 30 days reduced the duration of acute respiratory infections. Other studies have indicated faster wound healing in diabetics and less pain and fatigue in healthcare workers after grounding intervention.

Technical specifications and mechanism of action
The Earth's surface has a constant excess of free electrons. When the human body is in electrical contact with the ground – via skin contact or through conductive materials connected to a grounded power outlet or rod – electrons can flow into the body. These electrons function as natural antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and restore electrical balance. The body is an electrobiological system in which everything from nerve impulses to heartbeats and muscle contractions is controlled by electrical signals. The cell membrane's charge difference of around –70 mV is crucial for cell function, and research suggests that grounding may help stabilize this.

Grounding also has a possible connection to the Earth's electromagnetic field. The Schumann resonance, the Earth's fundamental electromagnetic frequency of around 7.8 Hz, lies in the same frequency range as human brainwaves (alpha waves) and heart rhythm variations. The HeartMath Institute has published studies showing that human HRV can synchronize with variations in the Earth's field. This suggests that grounding may be more than just electron exchange, but also a frequency-based harmony between humans and the planet.

Research highlights
– FEBS Open Bio (2025): Grounding increased ATP production by 5–11% and reduced oxidative stress by 22–33%.
– Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2004): Sleeping on grounding sheets normalized cortisol rhythm.
– Journal of Inflammation Research (2015): Grounding reduced inflammation and improved blood flow.
– Healthline (2025): A summary of research points to effects on sleep, pain, inflammation, and well-being.
– HeartMath Institute (2018–2024): Studies of global coherence show that human HRV can synchronize with the Earth's electromagnetic field.

How to practice grounding
The simplest way is to walk barefoot on grass, soil, sand, or in water for 15–30 minutes daily. However, for many people this is not practical throughout the year. In that case, grounding products can be a solution: grounding sheets in bed for continuous grounding through the night, mats under the desk or by the sofa, patches for local recovery, and grounding stakes for direct outdoor connection.
