Understand the benefits of earthing and grounding sheets – ground contact in practice
Earthing, also known as grounding or ground contact, is about bringing the body into direct electrical contact with the earth’s natural electrical potential. This is not a new concept, but rather a return to a state humans have lived in throughout most of their evolution. Before modern buildings, insulating shoes, and synthetic materials, the body was continuously connected to the ground through walking, resting, and sleeping on natural surfaces.
In today’s society, this contact has largely been broken. Many people are only in direct contact with the ground for a few weeks each year, typically during the summer. Grounding sheets and other grounding products have been developed to make it possible to restore ground contact indoors as well, especially during sleep, when the body is at rest and in recovery.
Why ground contact may be important
The body is a bioelectrical system. Nerve signals, muscle contractions, cell communication, and many biochemical processes are directly or indirectly dependent on electrical charges and voltage differences. When the body is insulated from the earth, a form of electrical imbalance may arise, especially in environments with a great deal of artificial electromagnetic activity.
In the literature, grounding is described as a way of giving the body a stable electrical reference, similar to how electrical equipment is grounded to function optimally and safely. When the body is connected to the earth’s potential, excess voltage can be equalized, and the electrical environment in the body can be stabilized.
Earthing and sleep
Sleep is one of the areas where many people report the clearest effects of grounding. Several studies and observations have shown that people who sleep grounded often experience falling asleep more quickly, fewer awakenings, and deeper sleep. One explanation often highlighted is that grounding may affect the regulation of stress hormones and the autonomic nervous system, allowing the body to enter a recovery phase more easily.
Using grounding sheets makes it possible to remain in continuous ground contact for many hours each night, without needing to change daily routines. This is one of the main reasons why grounding sheets are considered the most effective and practical form of earthing indoors.

Pain, stiffness and recovery
A significant proportion of users report reduced muscle stiffness, less joint pain, and better recovery with regular grounding. In the research literature, this is often linked to inflammatory processes and oxidative stress. Inflammation involves increased production of free radicals, which are electrically unstable molecules.
A central hypothesis in the earthing field is that electrons from the ground may help neutralize free radicals and thereby reduce inflammation-related processes. This mechanism is still the subject of research, but is supported by both laboratory measurements and clinical observations.
Blood circulation and oxygen distribution
Some studies have shown that grounding may affect the electrical properties of the blood, including by reducing the aggregation of red blood cells. When red blood cells clump together, microcirculation may be reduced. Better blood flow may in theory contribute to more efficient oxygen distribution and better transport of nutrients to tissues.
These findings do not mean that grounding is a treatment for disease, but they provide a possible biophysical framework for understanding why many people experience increased well-being and recovery.
What is a grounding sheet
A grounding sheet is a textile that contains conductive materials, usually silver threads, and is connected to ground. When the body is in contact with the sheet, grounding is achieved in the same way as when being barefoot outdoors. The sheet is connected either to a grounded electrical outlet or to a grounding rod.
Uno Vita offers, among other things, classic cotton grounding sheets with silver thread, as well as newer solutions with a higher proportion of silver. You can find an example of a classic grounding sheet here:

The difference between classic and advanced grounding sheets
Classic grounding sheets usually contain around 3 percent silver thread and require direct skin contact for optimal effect. They have been used in many of the published studies on earthing and provide good functionality, but must be washed and maintained properly to preserve conductivity.
More advanced grounding materials, often referred to as Evolution solutions, contain a significantly higher proportion of silver, typically around 50 percent. With such high conductivity, direct skin contact is not always necessary, as the body’s natural moisture is sufficient to maintain ground contact through a regular cotton sheet. This provides increased comfort, better hygiene, and a longer lifespan.
Grounding mats as an alternative or supplement
For people who spend a lot of time sitting in front of a PC or want ground contact during the day, grounding mats can be a good supplement. These are often used under the feet or on the desk and provide continuous contact with the earth while you work. An example of a grounding mat can be found here:

Safe use in Norwegian homes
Earthing products should always be connected to ground, not to live electrical parts. Products supplied by Uno Vita are adapted to Norwegian and European conditions and use grounded EU plugs with built-in safety resistance. This makes use safe when correctly installed.
In modern homes with electrical systems installed by a licensed electrician after the mid-1990s, the ground connection is normally tested and in good condition. If you are unsure about the electrical system, or want a completely separate ground connection, a grounding rod may be an alternative.
Earthing as part of a holistic lifestyle
Earthing is not intended to replace medical treatment or professional healthcare. It is a biophysical principle that can form part of a holistic lifestyle together with sufficient sleep, good water, daylight, movement, and reduced exposure to unnecessary electrical noise.
For healthy individuals, earthing is often described as a preventive measure, while people with strain or pain may experience more noticeable changes over time. The effect may come quickly for some and gradually for others.
