Hormone-disrupting substances are found in many parts of everyday life: food and food packaging, plastics, cosmetics, textiles, furniture, cleaning agents, electronics, dust, air and water. We cannot see, smell or avoid all these substances. However, that does not mean that we are powerless.
The most important thing is not to create a "chemical-free" life. It is practically impossible. The aim is to reduce repeated exposure from sources we can actually control – especially what comes into contact with food, drink and skin, and what we breathe in every day.
A new article at forskning.no about health-damaging and hormone-disrupting substances highlights five good basic tips: use less plastic around food, eat a varied diet, choose eco-labelled products, shop from Norwegian and European companies and reduce chemicals in dust and indoor air.

In short – start with these moves
- Do not heat food in plastic, and do not pour very hot food or drink into plastic containers.
- Use glass, stainless steel, porcelain and untreated wood where food is stored and prepared.
- Eat more fresh and lightly processed food, and less food from cans and plastic packaging.
- Choose fewer and simpler cosmetic and hygiene products, preferably perfume-free and Nordic Ecolabelled.
- Avoid unnecessary impregnation, stain protection and "non-stick" when you don't know the chemistry.
- Ventilate well, use a kitchen fan, vacuum regularly and wipe dust with a damp cloth.
- Consider an air purifier with both a HEPA filter and activated charcoal when the home has a lot of dust, smoke, traffic pollution or degassing from materials.
- Read the water authority's analyzes or test a private well before choosing a water filter.
- Choose documented filter technology according to the substance you want to reduce. Not all filters work against PFAS, heavy metals and organic compounds.
- Prioritize measures that reduce the supply. Dietary supplements or "detox" products can never replace cleaner food, air and water.
What are endocrine disruptors?
The hormonal system is the body's fine-tuned communication system. Hormones help regulate, among other things, growth, development, metabolism, blood sugar, reproduction, sleep, stress response and brain development.
Hormone-disrupting substances, often abbreviated EDC from English endocrine-disrupting chemicals, can mimic, block or alter the body's normal hormone signals.
The Norwegian Environment Agency mentions, among other things, bisphenol A, several phthalates, alkylphenols, PCBs and organic tin compounds as substances with documented hormone-disrupting properties. Other relevant substance groups are certain PFAS compounds, flame retardants, pesticides, UV filters, parabens and substitute substances such as BPS and BPF.
Some of the substances break down relatively quickly and are excreted when the supply stops. This applies, among other things, to many phthalates, bisphenols and parabens.
Others, such as several PFAS compounds and PCBs, can be very persistent and remain in the environment and the body for a long time. This distinction is important: Lower exposure can produce quickly measurable results for some substances, while reducing persistent environmental toxins is a long-term project.
Why are pregnancy, childhood and puberty particularly important periods?
The timing of the exposure can be as important as the amount. During fetal development, infancy, childhood and puberty, rapid and hormone-controlled changes occur.
WHO emphasizes that children are exposed to low doses and mixtures of hormone-disrupting chemicals, and that exposure during pregnancy and early childhood can be significant much later in life.
Children also ingest more dust and chemicals in relation to their body weight than adults. They stay close to the floor, touch many surfaces and often bring hands and objects to their mouths.
Pregnant, breastfeeding and parents of young children still do not need to try to make everything perfect. A few measures aimed at the biggest and most frequent sources are far more realistic - and probably more valuable - than an expensive total replacement of everything in the home.
New research: Plastic contact can be reduced faster than many people think
In April 2026 published Nature Medicine the randomized The PERTH study on a diet and everyday life with less plastic contact. The study consisted of an observational part with 211 adults and a seven-day pilot study in which 60 participants were randomly allocated to various measures.
Participants who received food with minimal plastic contact, kitchen utensils made of glass, metal and untreated wood and/or selected personal care products experienced measurable reductions in several urinary markers.
The group with both food and kitchenware with little plastic contact had after seven days:
- 37.5 percent lower mono-n-butyl phthalate.
- 53.5 percent lower monobenzyl phthalate.
- 59.7 percent lower BPA than the control group.
This was a small pilot study, and the results do not prove that seven days without plastic prevents disease. They show something different and very practical: A significant part of the daily exposure to certain plastic-related chemicals comes from influenceable everyday sources, and the biomarkers can change quickly when the sources are reduced.
A previous intervention study, The HERMOSA study, also showed that switching to selected cosmetic and grooming products could reduce levels of several phthalate, paraben and phenolic markers in teenage girls.
The message is therefore positive: small, targeted changes can actually be measured.
The most important order
When the goal is less exposure, the measures should come in this order:
- Remove or reduce the source.
- Air out and use spot extraction where the contamination occurs.
- Remove dust and particles from surfaces.
- Filter air or water when there is a relevant and documented technology.
- Support normal nutrition and the body's own defense systems.
This corresponds to the principles for a better indoor climate from US Environmental Protection Agency: Source control is usually most effective, followed by ventilation and then filtration.
An air purifier can be helpful, but it cannot make a highly polluting source harmless. A water filter can reduce certain substances, but only if the technology is suitable and the filter is maintained.
The kitchen: Here you can often reduce the most

1. Stop heating food in plastic
Heat, grease, acid, wear and tear and long contact time can increase the transfer of chemicals from packaging and containers to food.
Move the food to glass, porcelain or ceramic before heating in the microwave or conventional oven. Also allow very hot food to cool slightly before placing it in a possible plastic container.
Pay particular attention to old, scratched, discolored or soft plastic. "Microwave safe" primarily means that the container can withstand heating without being deformed. It is not a guarantee of zero chemical migration.
2. Change what you use every day - not all at once
Start with the storage boxes, drink bottles, frying pan and cutting board that are used most often.
Good material choices are:
- Glass for leftover food, drinks and dry goods.
- Stainless steel for lunch boxes, bottles, pots and kitchen utensils.
- Porcelain or ceramics from serious manufacturers for serving.
- Untreated wood for tools and cutting blades that are kept clean and dry.
- Cast iron, carbon steel or stainless steel as alternatives to worn non-stick pans.
Silicone can be practical at moderate temperatures, but quality varies. Use products intended for food contact from trusted manufacturers, and throw them away if they become sticky, cracked or visibly degraded.
3. Reduce ultra-processed, canned and heavily packaged foods
In the PERTH study, highly processed food, plastic-wrapped food and canned food were among the influenceable factors associated with higher levels of plastic-related chemicals.
A realistic strategy is to replace a few daily products:
- Choose fresh or frozen ingredients rather than ready meals in plastic.
- Choose dry beans or products in jars when practical.
- Buy fruit and vegetables loose when you can.
- Make larger portions at home and store the leftovers in jars.
- Use loose tea, coffee in paper bags or larger packs rather than many single servings.
The goal is not packaging-free perfection. It is to reduce the most frequent points of contact.
4. Be critical of "BPA-free" as the only seal of quality
In December 2024, the EU adopted a comprehensive ban on BPA in materials that come into contact with food, with transitional rules for certain products. This is an important step forward.
At the same time, "BPA-free" does not automatically mean that a product is free of all bisphenols or other problematic additives. The Norwegian Environment Agency describes several bisphenols as endocrine disruptors for humans and the environment.
Where it is simple, inert materials such as glass and stainless steel are therefore a more robust choice than trying to follow each new plastic chemical.
5. Eat a varied diet and follow targeted food warnings
A varied diet reduces the risk of one food becoming a dominant source of the same unwanted substance.
- Wash fruit and vegetables.
- Varies between species and producers.
- Follow public advice on fish, seafood and other foodstuffs.
- Avoid basing your diet on one dominant food or raw material group.
Pregnant women should use The Norwegian Food Safety Authority's updated advice on food and environmental toxins rather than general lists from social media.
The bathroom: Fewer products can mean lower total exposure
6. Prioritize products that stay on the skin
Body cream, face cream, deodorant, make-up, perfume and sun products can remain on the skin for many hours. Therefore, start with these when you clean the bathroom cupboard.
Feel free to choose:
- Fewer products with a shorter and understandable list of ingredients.
- Perfume-free alternatives when perfume does not have a necessary function.
- Pump or cream rather than spray and aerosol, so that less is inhaled.
- Swan-labelled products when there are good alternatives.
The Nordic Ecolabel's updated cosmetic requirements excludes, among other things, hormone-disrupting substances and organic fluorine substances, and imposes stricter requirements on perfume allergens and microplastics.
Environmental labeling is therefore a practical shortcut for those who do not want to interpret long ingredient lists themselves.
7. Do not blindly replace a problem substance with an unknown substance
Words like "natural", "pure", "green" and "chemical-free" are not precise safety standards. Everything consists of chemical substances, including natural substances.
Instead, look for:
- Full ingredient list.
- Serious producer.
- European responsible business.
- Relevant environmental labelling.
- Available documentation on quality and safety.
Focus in particular on products that are used daily, over large areas of skin or on children. An infrequently used product is usually less important than a deodorant, cream or perfume that is used every morning.
8. Simplify cleaning
Strong smell is not the same as clean. Limit room sprays, scented candles, perfumed cleaning sprays and unnecessary disinfectants.
Use the right agent for the right task, follow the dosage and ensure ventilation. Many everyday surfaces are cleaned with a microfibre cloth, water and a mild, eco-labelled cleaning agent.
Never mix cleaning agents. In particular, chlorine-containing products must not be mixed with acid or ammonia.
Textiles, furniture and equipment
9. Wash new textiles before use
Clothes, bedding and other textiles may contain residues from dyeing, finishing, impregnation and transport. Wash new textiles before they are used close to the skin, especially for infants and children.
Feel free to choose products without unnecessary features such as:
- "Stain repellent".
- "Antibacterial".
- "Permanently odorless".
- "Easy care" or "iron-free" when the treatment is not explained in more detail.
Also pay attention to the water- and grease-repellent treatment. ECHA describes clothing, cosmetics and materials in contact with food as possible sources of PFAS.
"PFOA-free" just means that one specific substance has been avoided. Rather, ask if the product is free of added PFAS as a group.
10. Air out new furniture, mattresses and renovated rooms
New building materials, paint, glue, flooring, furniture and mattresses can emit volatile organic compounds, often called VOCs.
Ensure good ventilation during and after renovation. Allow new products to degas in a well-ventilated room before an infant or pregnant woman spends many hours there, if this is practically possible.
When renovating, it is more effective to choose low-emitting materials and control the source than to try to filter everything out afterwards.

11. Remove the dust - don't just move it
Phthalates, flame retardants, PFAS and other chemicals can stick to dust particles.
A simple routine can reduce both dust, allergens and chemicals that accompany the dust:
- Vacuum the floor, carpets, sofa and areas around electronics regularly.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a good particle filter, and maintain the filter and bag.
- Dry surfaces with a damp cloth rather than a dry dusting brush.
- Wash floors, especially where small children play.
- Wash hands before cooking and eating, and after contact with a lot of dust or receipts.
- Avoid shoes inside, so that less soil, road dust and residues of pesticides are drawn in.
12. Ventilate strategically and use point extraction
Air briefly and effectively when the outside air is good. Use a kitchen fan that directs the air out when frying and baking, and a bathroom fan when showering.
On days with a lot of wood smoke, pollen or traffic pollution, ventilation should be adapted to local conditions.
Ventilation dilutes gases and particles, while point extraction removes them close to the source. This is often more effective than placing an air purifier far away from the kitchen or renovation area.
13. Use the right air cleaner for the right problem
HEPA filters are developed for particles such as fine dust, pollen, smoke and particle-bound compounds. Activated charcoal or another documented sorption medium is necessary when the goal is also to reduce certain gases, odors and VOCs.
A machine with only a HEPA filter does not remove gases effectively, and a small amount of coal quickly becomes limited in capacity.
Choose an air purifier according to room size and air volume, not just the stated filter percentage. It must move enough air through the filter and be used regularly.
EPA points out that no air purifier removes all pollutants. Filters are usually designed for either particles, gases or a combination.
Water: Test or read the report before choosing a filter
14. Find out what is actually in the water
Municipal drinking water in Norway is generally well controlled, but local variations, old pipes, private wells and certain sources of pollution can change the need.
Read the water authority's analyses. If you have a private well, you should use an accredited laboratory and test both microbiology and relevant chemical parameters.

Read these before choosing a system. They explain why activated charcoal, ion exchange, particle filters, UV and reverse osmosis have different applications.
15. Choose filter according to fabric - and change the filter in time
A taste and smell filter is not automatically documented against PFAS. A sediment filter captures particles, but does not necessarily remove dissolved chemicals. UV can inactivate microorganisms, but does not remove PFAS or heavy metals.
Reverse osmosis is often the broadest solution at the kitchen tap when the goal is the reduction of many dissolved substances and particles, but RO must also be correctly sized and maintained.
Put filter change in the calendar. A saturated or poorly maintained filter does not provide the performance the system was designed for.
Also remember that a normal TDS meter measures electrically conductive, dissolved substances together. It alone cannot tell whether the water contains PFAS, pesticides or other individual substances.

This is a relevant choice for households or professional environments that need high capacity and wide reduction at a fixed tap point.
As with all water filters, the specific water quality, the documentation for the desired substance and the maintenance plan should be assessed before purchase.
EdelWasser Gold – bench mounted RO without electricity
EdelWasser Gold is a bench-mounted five-stage reverse osmosis system that is powered by water pressure and requires no electricity.
The system combines pre-filter, RO membrane, activated charcoal and hygienic after-treatment. It is particularly interesting for those who want an independent kitchen solution and at the same time want to reduce the need for bottled water.

For adults: Nutritional support comes after source control
The body has its own systems for antioxidant defense and metabolism of foreign substances, including glutathione and enzymes in the liver's phase II systems.
Good nutrition with sufficient protein, minerals, vitamins, fiber and cruciferous vegetables provides the foundation.

A realistic 7-day plan for a home with a lower chemical load
Day 1 – food and warmth
Move all heating from plastic to glass or porcelain. Find one good drinking bottle and two to three storage boxes in glass or stainless steel.
Day 2 – grocery shopping
Replace three heavily packaged or ultra-processed products you buy each week with fresh, frozen or less packaged options. Don't try to change your entire diet in one day.
Day 3 – the bathroom
Sort the products according to how often and how long they are on the skin. When a daily product runs out, replace it with a fragrance-free, eco-labeled or simpler alternative.
Day 4 – textiles and bedroom
Wash new bedding and new children's clothes. Remove room sprays and strong scented products. Air the mattress and bedroom well.
Day 5 – dust and air
Vacuum around electronics, under the bed and sofa and in places where children play. Dry surfaces with a damp cloth. Check that the kitchen and bathroom fan is working.
Day 6 – water
Find the latest water report from the municipality, or order an analysis if you have a private well. Write down what you actually want to reduce before comparing filters.
Day 7 – new procurement rules
Determine three simple rules, for example:
- No heating in plastic.
- The Nordic Ecolabel when there is a good alternative.
- No unnecessary impregnation or antibacterial treatment.
After seven days, you have not created a chemical-free home. You have done something more realistic: reduced several of the daily sources that matter most.
Especially for pregnant, breastfeeding and families with small children
Prioritize calmly and systematically:
- Food and drink without unnecessary plastic contact and heating.
- Official dietary advice for pregnancy and children.
- Perfume-free and eco-labelled products that are used daily.
- Clean floors and less dust where the child plays.
- Good ventilation and as little smoke, spray and degassing as possible.
- Documented water quality and the right filter only when there is a real need.
Avoid aggressive "detox" regimens during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The aim in these periods is primarily a lower supply, nutritious food, normal fluid balance and follow-up according to public advice and by a midwife or doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can hormone-disrupting substances be completely avoided?
No. They are found in the environment, food, products, dust, air and water. The goal should be to reduce repeated exposure from the largest sources you control, not to create an impossible "chemical-free" life.
Are all plastics dangerous?
No. Plastic is a large and varied group of materials, and risks depend on chemical composition, use, temperature, wear and contact with food or skin.
The most effective precautionary measure is to avoid heating food in plastic and to use glass or stainless steel for the most frequent contact points.
Is BPA-free plastic safe?
BPA-free means that bisphenol A has not been used or detected according to the current definition. It does not necessarily say anything about other bisphenols, phthalates or additives.
Glass and stainless steel are therefore more robust choices when practical.
Does reducing plastic for just one week help?
The 2026 PERTH study found significant reductions in several urinary markers of phthalates and BPA after a seven-day intervention.
The study was small and measured biomarkers, not disease, but shows that certain exposures can be affected quickly.
Does a HEPA air purifier remove endocrine disruptors?
HEPA filters can trap particles and chemicals that are bound to particles. Gaseous VOCs require activated carbon or other suitable sorption medium.
No air purifier replaces source control and ventilation.
Do all water filters remove PFAS?
No. Documented activated carbon, specialized ion exchange and reverse osmosis are the most current technologies, but performance varies between products and PFAS compounds.
Look for specific test documentation and follow the filter's capacity and replacement requirements.
Can dietary supplements detoxify PFAS and plastic chemicals?
No single supplement formula has been documented to remove all such substances from the body.
Nutrition can support normal antioxidant and turnover processes, but reducing the exposure itself is the first priority.
What should pregnant women prioritize first?
Avoid heating in plastic, choose varied food according to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority's advice, reduce unnecessary perfumes and sprays, keep floors and dust surfaces clean, ventilate well and only use targeted supplements after clarification with healthcare personnel.
Conclusion: You don't have to do everything - but you should start with the most important
Hormone-disrupting substances and other environmental toxins are part of the modern environment. Regulation is important, and Norway and the EU have come a long way, but the regulations alone cannot eliminate all exposure or all harmful substitute substances.
The good news is that everyday choices matter. New research shows that lower plastic contact can produce measurable changes in a short time for certain substances.
By prioritizing food contact, cosmetics, dust, indoor air and water, you can reduce the overall burden without fear, extreme measures or a guilty conscience.
Start with the source. Air and clean. Filter where the technology is relevant. Then build a good nutritional foundation.
It is the most logical, sustainable and knowledge-based order.
