AmpliQ CoQ10™ – next generation Q10 with FenuMat® technology

Jan Fredrik Poleszynski |

Coenzyme Q10, often called Q10 or CoQ10, is one of the most well-known nutrients in mitochondrial nutrition, cellular energy and healthy aging. Many people associate Q10 with energy, heart, muscles and vitality, but the most important question is not just how much Q10 a product contains. The decisive factor is how much the body is actually able to absorb and utilize.

AmpliQ CoQ10™ from Life Extension has been developed precisely with this as a starting point. The product combines 100 mg of coenzyme Q10 in the form of ubiquinone with FenuMat® CoQ10, a patented delivery platform based on galactomannans from fenugreek seeds. The goal is to improve bioavailability, i.e. the amount of Q10 that actually becomes available in the bloodstream after ingestion. The Life Extension documentation describes AmpliQ as an advanced "CoQ10 + FenuMAT" formulation with up to 24 times higher bioavailability than standard ubiquinone and up to 3 times higher bioavailability than standard ubiquinol.

What is AmpliQ CoQ10™?

AmpliQ CoQ10™ 100 mg is a vegetarian dietary supplement from Life Extension. Each capsule contains a proprietary AmpliQ™ CoQ10 blend of 500 mg, which provides 100 mg of ubiquinone, i.e. coenzyme Q10, and 125 mg of galactomannans from fenugreek seeds as FenuMat® CoQ10. The product is stated as gluten-free, non-GMO and vegetarian. Recommended use is one capsule daily with food.

What makes AmpliQ CoQ10™ special is not just the amount of Q10, but the delivery system itself. Regular Q10 is fat-soluble and water-resistant, which makes absorption difficult. AmpliQ has been developed to make Q10 more available to the body using a plant-based fiber technology.

What is coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like, fat-soluble substance found naturally in all the body's cells. It is particularly concentrated in tissues with a high energy demand, such as the heart, liver, kidneys and muscles. Q10 is included in the mitochondria, where the cells convert energy from nutrients into ATP, the body's basic energy molecule. Q10 functions as a mobile electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, and the literature describes the substance as a key component in mitochondrial respiration and redox biology.

Mitochondria are often referred to as the cells' powerhouses. This is where the body produces large parts of the energy the cells need for normal function. Q10 is part of this system. This does not mean that Q10 in itself is an "energy drink" or a quick stimulant, but that the substance is part of the basic biochemistry that makes normal cellular energy production possible.

Q10 is also found in food, particularly in fatty fish, offal, meat and some whole grain products. The amounts in food are usually moderate compared to what you get from a concentrated dietary supplement. The body also produces Q10 itself, but its production and tissue levels can be affected by age, diet, lifestyle, genetic factors and general metabolic status.

Why is Q10 uptake a challenge?

Q10 is a demanding substance to formulate. It is hydrophobic, i.e. water-repellent, and has low water solubility. This means that standard Q10 powder in a single capsule does not necessarily provide effective absorption. Bioavailability is affected by several factors, including raw material form, particle size, crystal structure, fat content of the meal, digestion, bile secretion and delivery system. Review articles on Q10 bioavailability show that different formulations can provide very different uptake, and that formulation technology can be decisive for how much Q10 actually reaches the bloodstream.

This is why "high dose" is not always the same as "high utilization". A product with a lower dose, but better formulation, can in practice give higher circulating levels than a product with a higher dose and weaker absorption. AmpliQ CoQ10™ has been developed with this very principle in mind: better delivery, better dispersion and higher bioavailability.

What is FenuMat® technology?

FenuMat® is a patented, natural and food-based delivery platform from Akay Bioactives. The technology is based on galactomannans, a type of soluble dietary fiber from fenugreek seeds. According to Akay, FenuMat® has been developed to carry oils and hydrophobic molecules under optimized conditions, with a water-based process without organic solvents or synthetic auxiliaries.

In AmpliQ CoQ10™, this technology is used to combine ubiquinone with a fiber-based matrix. This matrix has been developed to improve stability, dispersion and availability in the digestive system. Consumer-friendly explained, you can say that FenuMat® helps the Q10 molecule through one of the biggest challenges: getting from the capsule, through digestion and further into the circulation.

The FenuMat® technology is particularly interesting because it represents a different approach than many older Q10 formulations. Instead of just using oil, softgel or higher doses, AmpliQ uses a plant-based galactomannan platform that is engineered for fat-soluble bioactives.

What does the AmpliQ CoQ10™ documentation show?

Life Extension's product material states that AmpliQ CoQ10™ has been clinically studied to provide higher circulating Q10 levels than standard Q10 formulations. In a pharmacokinetic comparison in adults aged 30–57 years, AmpliQ100 was compared to 100 mg standard ubiquinone and 100 mg standard ubiquinol. According to the manufacturer's documentation, AmpliQ100 provided up to 24 times higher bioavailability than standard ubiquinone and up to 3 times higher bioavailability than standard ubiquinol.

The documentation also shows data from older adults aged 58–73. In this group, a 50 mg AmpliQ formulation was compared with 50 mg standard ubiquinone. According to the material, AmpliQ50 provided up to 16 times higher bioavailability than standard CoQ10-50.

This is an important point: The figures are about bioavailability, not whether the product can be used to treat disease. This means that AmpliQ has been developed to provide higher circulating levels of Q10, so that the body gets more available Q10 from a given dose.

Why does AmpliQ use ubiquinone and not ubiquinol?

Q10 is mainly found in two forms: ubiquinone and ubiquinol. Ubiquinone is the oxidized form, while ubiquinol is the reduced form. The body can convert Q10 between these forms as needed. Many premium products have used ubiquinol because this form has often been marketed as more bioavailable than traditional ubiquinone.

AmpliQ CoQ10™ shows a different way. Here, ubiquinone is used, but in an advanced delivery matrix. The point is that the raw material form alone does not determine uptake. Formulation, solubility, dispersion and delivery system can be equally important. Overview literature on Q10 points precisely to the fact that bioavailability is strongly influenced by how Q10 is formulated, and that there is not always a simple rule that one Q10 form is best in all products.

For the consumer, this means that one should not simply ask: "Is this ubiquinone or ubiquinol?" One should also ask: "How is Q10 formulated, and is there documentation on the recording?"

Why is Q10 interesting in aging?

Q10 is interesting from an aging perspective because mitochondrial function, redox balance and cellular energy biology are central topics in aging research. The body's own Q10 status can vary throughout life, and several professional sources describe Q10 as a substance that is part of the cells' energy systems and membrane biology. BfR describes coenzyme Q10 as a ubiquinone that is found in living cells and is involved in the mitochondria's energy production in the respiratory chain.

This does not make Q10 a treatment against aging or disease. This makes Q10 a nutritionally interesting substance for adults who are concerned with mitochondria, normal energy turnover at the cellular level, healthy lifestyle and long-term nutritional support.

Who might be interested in AmpliQ CoQ10™?

AmpliQ CoQ10™ may be appropriate for adults who want a modern Q10 supplement with an emphasis on absorption technology. The product may be of particular interest to people who already use Q10 and want a more advanced formulation, people concerned with mitochondria and cellular energy biology, adults over 40 who want a Q10 product with high bioavailability, and people who prefer vegetarian, gluten-free and non-GMO formulations.

The product may also be relevant for those who have previously thought that a high dose is always most important. AmpliQ illustrates another principle: A smarter formulation can be at least as important as the number of milligrams on the label.

How is AmpliQ CoQ10™ used?

Recommended use is one capsule daily with food, or as recommended by a qualified healthcare professional. Since Q10 is fat-soluble, it is natural to take the product with a meal that contains some fat, such as eggs, fatty fish, avocado, nuts, olive oil or another healthy fat source.

Each box contains 60 vegetarian capsules, which provides 60 days of consumption at the recommended daily dosage.

Safety and precautions

The Norwegian Science Committee for Food and the Environment, VKM, has assessed coenzyme Q10 in dietary supplements. VKM concluded that 100 mg of coenzyme Q10 per day from food supplements is unlikely to represent a risk of negative health effects in children from 10 years of age, adolescents and adults. This is relevant because AmpliQ CoQ10™ provides 100 mg of Q10 per recommended daily dose.

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people who use drugs, people with underlying medical conditions, and people who use blood thinners or other fixed medication, should consult a doctor before use. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet, and the recommended daily dose should not be exceeded.

Important about health claims in Norway and the EU

In Norway and the EU, there are strict rules for which health claims can be used for dietary supplements. EFSA has assessed several proposed health claims for coenzyme Q10, including those related to energy metabolism, blood pressure, oxidative protection, cognitive function, cholesterol and endurance, without these being approved as authorized health claims.

Therefore, in Norwegian and European communication, AmpliQ CoQ10™ should be described through documented, neutral and nutritional formulations: Q10 is found naturally in the body, is part of the mitochondria's electron transport chain, is a fat-soluble substance, is found particularly in energy-demanding tissues, and the AmpliQ formulation has been developed for better bioavailability.

This provides a more precise and regulatory safe communication than copying American formulations about heart health, inflammation, blood sugar, fatigue or antioxidant protection as direct product claims.

Briefly summarized

AmpliQ CoQ10™ represents a new generation of Q10 supplements where the main innovation lies in the uptake technology. The product combines 100 mg of ubiquinone with FenuMat® CoQ10, a patented plant-based delivery platform based on galactomannans from fenugreek seeds.

Q10 is a naturally occurring substance in the body and is part of the mitochondria's normal energy biology. The challenge with Q10 has traditionally been low and variable bioavailability. AmpliQ has been developed to solve this challenge by making Q10 more available to the body.

For those who want a modern Q10 supplement with a focus on documented uptake technology, a vegetarian capsule and a well-thought-out formulation, AmpliQ CoQ10™ is one of the most interesting options in Life Extension's range.
